About Dr. Ariel Sylvester

Education

Dr. Ariel Sylvester obtained her bachelors degree in early childhood education, her Illinois Professional Educator License, and ESL endorsement in 2015 from North Park University. In 2017 she obtained her masters in early childhood administration from National Louis University. In 2022 she obtained a doctorate of education in early childhood education and Illinois Principal License in 2025 from DePaul University. 

Experience

Dr. Sylvester has been working in the field of early childhood education since 2013. She began work as a full-time teacher in Pre-K - 2nd grade classrooms in 2016 with Chicago Public Schools and currently substitute teaches with them from time to time and is working towards becoming an assistant principal. She is also listed in CPS's principal quality pool. Dr. Sylvester has taught early childhood education courses at Northern Illinois University and DePaul University. She is currently an adjunct instructor at DePaul. She has been a supervisor and observer for early childhood student teachers at Northern Illinois University and DePaul University. She has been a Illinois Gateways to Opportunity Direct Route Reviewer with INCCRRA (Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agency) and an Early Childhood Education Content Test Reviewer with ILTS/ISBE (Illinois Licensure Testing System/Illinois State Board of Education). She is a certified teacher and principal evaluator with the Illinois State Board of Education. She serves on the advisory council for Birth to Five Illinois, was accepted to be a NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) peer reviewer for higher education. She has been a part of work groups for Northwestern's EC*REACH (Early Childhood* Research Alliance of Chicago) and ECRC (Every Child Ready Chicago) along with Start Early Chicago. She trains educators on many different topics with Illinois Action for Children (IAFC). She conducts research on college students who are parents, on-campus childcare, and Black homeschooling families and organizations. She speaks at different conferences across the country pertaining to her research findings. She is currently serving on a dissertation committee for one of DePaul's doctoral students. She has published research, and has her own self-publishing business - Pretty Nerd Publishing - that she writes and sells her 12 books in 7 different genres under. She has also published an empathic studies curriculum for Pre-K - 2nd listed below.

Expertise

Dr. Sylvester has a significant amount of expertise pertaining to the field of early childhood education. She has been a classroom teacher, has worked with INCCRRA, Gateways, Start Early, ECRC, EC*REACH, has volunteered with ILTS, works with Birth to Five Illinois, was accepted to volunteer with NAEYC as a peer reviewer for higher education, worked with Chicago Public Schools, and has worked in higher education. With her expertise she provides a plethora of training to help early educators improve their practice so that our early learners can develop the tools they need during this critical period to be lifelong learners.

Dr. Sylvester provides a wide range of educational consulting services to support early educators and early learning environments. Her expertise includes training, professional development, teacher evaluation, classroom environment evaluation, curriculum planning, kindergarten readiness for Pre-K students, and small group instruction and planning in math and reading for grades K-2. She understands that our early educators aren't given the compensation they deserve which makes it difficult to pay for university courses to obtain more education. Teachers shouldn't be denied knowledge pertaining to best practices just because their wages are too low to attend higher education institutions. With her consulting service she can offer the insight early educators need at a fraction of the cost. She understands that our early learners are in their critical years and need support during this critical period to have lifelong educational success.

Mentoring

  • Packages include any of the following services offered, or other needed services not listed, combined into one complete package. What's included in the package would be decided upon by the school/organization/network after a needs assessment has been conducted through the free consultation.  
  • Pricing for the packages would depend on the duration (months) of consulting and what's included in the package. Pricing can be negotiated, however, there would be a monthly fee instead of an hourly rate.

  • If you as an individual teacher would like to be mentored by Dr. Sylvester, this service can be provided if you teach Pre-K - 2nd grade. Since you are an individual teacher, you wouldn't be charged network and district prices. 
  • Mentoring includes observing your teaching, evaluating based on the Danielson Framework, goal-setting for improvement, providing resources, and feedback to improve your practice, and follow-up meetings either in-person or online. This service can last as long as you would like it too.
  • There is an hourly fee associated with this service.

  • If your teachers need classroom evaluation to improve their practice this service can provide observation and feedback for Pre-K - 2nd Grade Classrooms. If they are in need of any specific training this service can provide that as well.
  •  The timeframe of this service would be dependent upon your institution. It can depend upon the number of teachers and the follow up evaluations, as well as what the training would be. 
  • Evaluations include observing the teacher's instruction, providing feedback, goal-setting for improvement, and two follow-up sessions. 
  • There is an hourly fee associated with this service. 

Professional Development

  • Professional Development topics are at your institution's discretion, as long as it pertains to Pre-K - 2nd Grade.
  • Dr. Sylvester can partner with any approved ISBE Professional Development vendor who would like her to provide professional development services at your institutions discretion. 
  • If you ware a private institution, the professional development is at your discretion and you do not have to be an approved ISBE PD vendor.
  • There is an hourly fee associated with this service.

  • Dr. Sylvester is a certified teacher evaluator utilizing the Danielson Framework. She can observe any Pre-K - 12 teacher and provide teaching feedback utilizing the Danielson framework. 
  • Dr. Sylvester can also evaluate any Pre-K classroom environment utilizing the ECERS-3 and provide feedback to Pre-k teachers more comfortable with this tool.
  • To complete classroom environment evaluation utilizing Danielson or ECERS-3 includes observing the environment, providing teacher feedback, and teacher goal-setting for improvement, and two follow-up sessions.
  • There is an hourly fee associated with this service.

For those who don't have a curriculum at their school and need help with design and implementation based on the Illinois Early Learning standards for Pre-K and the Common Core State Standards for K - 2, this service can be offered as well. 
  • For help in curriculum planning, it is up to the administrators discretion how long this service would last.

  • Many schools struggle to improve the reading and math abilities of their students in Pre- K-2. As early educators we understand the importance of setting the foundation for a quality education. Setting that foundation prepares them for their future education endeavors. 
  • One way to improve students' reading and math abilities is to provide instruction to each individual student (Gilbert et al., 2013; Askew et al., 2004) at their level in small groups.
  • This service is for Pre - K-2 teachers who need help with small group planning, design, implementation, and assessment.

  • Some Pre-K teachers struggle to prepare their students to enter Kindergarten ready for the mature demands of the grade. 
  • Dr. Sylvester can work with Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers to implement a smooth transition from Pre-K to Kindergarten. She will do this by informing Pre-K teachers on how to implement more rigorous practices that are still age appropriate. She will inform Kindergarten teachers on how to implement more play-based learning while still instructing their students.

Three Hearts Curriculum

Three Hearts Curriculum - Empathic Studies Curriculum Pre-K- 2nd

 The Three Hearts Curriculum was designed give educators a guide on how to teach certain difficult topics to children in Pre-K - 2nd grade classrooms while also teaching them to be empathic. Bloom’s Taxonomy was utilized for learning objectives that build with higher grades and age ranges. Guiding questions, guiding verses, read alouds, Common Core State Standards for ELA, Illinois Social Science standards, Next Generation Science standards, and Illinois SEL and Early Learning standards are all included or embedded throughout the curriculum. There are a total of 10 units per grade. The units focus on topics such as; economics, community, climate, disabilities, race/ethnicity, language, family, care & consent, activism, and religion. There are vocabulary words aligned to each unit and a script on how to teach the vocabulary words and introduce the topics in a developmentally appropriate way. There are at least 4-6 age-appropriate books with graphic organizers that align with the assessments and grade levels for each unit and activity. Also included is a pre- and post-Empathy test to give students before and after all units have been taught.  This curriculum is meant to be flexible and implemented based on your classroom, students, beliefs, and time management.
